This popped up in my newsfeed today. It was posted by a mother whose college age kids are beginning to question their faith. Her Christmas wish is for her children to love and serve God.
I don’t have children of my own, but my wish for my young nephew would be to learn and explore; to become a freethinker and skeptic, always testing claims against available evidence. I would wish for him to be kind to all living things. I would wish for him to eschew imaginary gods and do good here on earth. There are higher ideals than servitude to aspire to in life.
This image is somewhat innocuous and easy to ignore, but it still rubbed me the wrong way. I noticed that it originates with Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, which has been classified as a hate group due to their anti-LGBT rhetoric. Christianity is certainly not the height of morality. In fact, it can sometimes be the exact opposite.
